gfire's singing influences #2 - Hank Williamsgfire's singing influences #2 - Hank Williams

I'm a bit of a Johnni (as in a female Cash) come lately to the world of old-time country, having grown up in hard-rock/metal territory as a middle class Baltimorean.

But once I get into something great, I cling tight and ride it away, like the Cancerian I am - and boy are there some GOOD sounds to be had from the old-time deep south.

Hank Williams' songs are just plain song writing done right - 2 1/2 to 3 minute gems of cheatin,' drinkin' and ramblin' blues, sung with heartfelt country soul and just the right amount of cracklin' & yodelin.' The man only recorded for 6 years - 1947-1952 - before drinking himself to death at only 29. His legacy of classic songs, though, have already easily outlasted his brief time on earth. Some of my favorites include:

"You're Gonna Change (or I'm Gonna Leave)"
"Lovesick Blues"
"Ramblin' Man"
"They'll Never Take Her Love From Me"
"Cold, Cold Heart"
"I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love With You"

I own the two CD set "Hank Williams - 40 Greatest Hits" and I recommend it highly.

happy listenin' folks!!
