I'm pretty sure that the average American has never even heard of Sandy Denny. She came to prominence in the British folk-rock music scene in the late 1960's as a member of Fairport Convention, whose members also included the great guitarist/songwriter Richard Thompson. She also released several wonderful solo albums after leaving Fairport before her tragically early death in 1978 at the age of 31. Perhaps her most famous song is "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" - also recorded by Judy Collins, Eva Cassidy and many others. But perhaps her most well-known, but never reported credit is singing the amazing duet with Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore." Some of my other favorite Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention tunes include "Late November," "Tam Lin," "Banks of the Nile," "Next Time Around" and Richard Thompson's "For Shame of Doing Wrong." If you are a fan of '60's Bob Dylan, '60's-'70's Joni Mitchell or any of the other great folk-rock acts of the period, you owe it to yourself to check out some of Sandy Denny's work. |
